Subject: Herr Ambassador On the Radio and on The Spot
Hi Guys!
Well, I dragged myself from my sick bed today to take part in the BBC West
Midlands Radio's Ed Doolan show, which featured the German Ambassador
attempting to justify the German Fighting Dog laws.
Also on the programme was Mike Mullen, a well-known dog expert over here, he
is a leading canine beahviourist. Apparently, Mike put the Ambassdor on the
spot so much last week (Mike has a regular 'Pet Problemns' slot on the show)
that the Amnbassador asked to go away and get some facts and figures and come
back for a re-match this week.
The "facts and figures" were pretty predictible, and the Ambassador made the
tired old point that the laws were designed to protect people from dangerous
dogs because of poor Volkan being killed etc. I came back pretty hard on him
pointing out that Ibrahmin K, the owner of the pit bull 'Zeus' was a known
criminal and that his dog was already the subject of a control order. Despite
complaints form local residents, the police and local authority did not act
against him, so they are the guilty parties, not the thousands of responsible
dog owners in Germany.
I also added that as the father of three children and the owner of 7 dogs, I
deplore any child being hurt by dogs and that it is only right that a
genuinely dangerous dog should be put down and the full weight of the law
brought against the owner... but NOT to blame ALL dogs of that breed and
related breeds or their owners for ther faults of one bad dog and bad owner.
Mike made some interesting points on from this, and the Ambassador was
obiously uncomfortable. Ed Doolan was a good host and let us all talk
equally without too many interruptions.
In closing, Mike extended an invitation to the Ambassador on behalf of the
Kennel Club to attend Day One at Crufts (Hounds and Terriers), so he could
actually MEET some Staffies and their owners. The Ambassador didn't respond,
but a formal invitation is being sent to him, so we shall see...
The Ambassador closed by attempting to make a joke. "Of course, one shouldn't
mention the war, ha ha, but a lot of breeds of 'dangerous' dogs were used byt
he forces in wartime and are still around today..."
My response - for which I must thank Cathie D for sending an excellent e-mail
reminding me of facts and figures - was that the German Shepherd Dog TOPS the
league table for biting statistics in Germany, whilst Staffies and other Bull
breeds are way down. GSDs were, of course, used extensively by the Nazi
forces in WW2 and thay are the 'National Dog'. But why was the National Dog
not on any 'Fighting Dog' List of any state or Federal Law? Funnily enough,
the poor guy didn't answer....
(I thought I heard him gulp when Ed Doolan said I was also a guest on the
show, but I could be hearing things... <bg> )
All in all, a useful little 20 minutes and between Mike and I, I hope we put
the Federal Government on the spot. I bet the Ambassador was sorry he got out
of bed this morning....
Thanks to everyone who e-mailedthe BC to get me on the show... the researcher
was impressed and doculdn't phone me quick enough this morning to ask me to
take part!
Back to my sick bed now.... ;o)
