I am in the process of adopting a rescue dog. The dog in question is a medium sized mixed breed; around two years old; and has had a somewhat challenging start to life. I currently have two pets a 4 year old cat and a 6 year-old Labrador Retriever. Both of them are well-behaved and generally get along well with other animals.
Although; I have never introduced a new dog into our household; especially one with an uncertain past. I am concerned about how to make this transition as smooth as possible for everyone involved. I want to ensure that my existing pets do not feel threatened and that the rescue dog can gradually feel comfortable in its new environment.
Could anyone share tips or personal experiences on the best approach to introduce the rescue dog to my cat and Labrador? Should I be doing anything specific during the first few days or weeks? How can I minimize stress for all the animals involved? Are there any particular signs I should watch for that might indicate the integration is not going well?
